A very bad night on the town...
Bad experiences - we all have had them, yet some are more frightening then
others. Cindy* is an attractive girl with the girl-next-door look. Cindy had been out celebrating with friends after a Grand Final win in their local netball competition. She was a very good player and was very popular with team-mates and friends. The entire team and friends were enjoying what was to be their last season together … and after winning the competition they had their reasons to celebrate.
... the doctors found that Cindy had been drugged that night at some stage and was close to dying.
We came across Cindy early on a Monday morning lying outside our Islington Warehouse of Newcastle City Mission. Shocked by the sight of someone sprawled on the footstep of the building, Dave our volunteer worker rushed to her side. Cindy was unconscious and was very pale. Dave had been preparing to make some deliveries of furniture and clothing to some local residents in need.
Dave quickly called for an ambulance and, being trained in First Aid, with his colleague's assistance worked on Cindy to wake and assist her. The ambulance arrived to find Cindy still unconscious on the pavement, but wrapped in a blanket and supported by the two volunteers.
After a long few days at the hospital and a number of tests and procedures, the doctors found that Cindy had been drugged that night at some stage and was close to dying. The volunteers who were there to assist Cindy followed her progress and remained friends with family and friends after she was released from the hospital.
We continued to support Cindy with counselling and welfare assistance and then were able to find part-time work through Wesley Uniting Employment.
