Family and friends gather for LifeForce Memorial Service

06 October 2006

Sunday, October 15th, 10.00am, Forecourt area, Customs House, 1 Bond St, Newcastle

A special Memorial Service for families and friends who have been touched by suicide will be held in the forecourt area outside Custom House (1 Bond Street, Newcastle) on Sunday, October 15th beginning at 10.00am.
Media should arrive at 9.30am.

For a number of years Wesley LifeForce has had an annual Memorial Service at the Sydney Opera House with over 350 people attending each year. Wesley Newcastle, in conjunction with Wesley LifeForce, believes the people of Newcastle and the Hunter deserve the same opportunity to come together in remembrance.

The Memorial Service is open to all people who have been bereaved by suicide through the loss of a loved one or friend. The service will bring people together in the spirit of comfort and hope. Those attending the service will have the opportunity to cast a sunflower into Newcastle Harbour as a gesture of love and remembrance. The service will be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, respect and security.

Speakers will include a representative of Hunter New England Health and there will be a special musical performance by James and Anna Buckingham.
Date:  Sunday, 15th October
Time:  10.00am
Venue: Forecourt area, Customs House, 1 Bond St, Newcastle

During the past 10 years Wesley LifeForce has trained more than 15,000 Australians in identifying the signs of suicide and depression and how to take preventative action. It also empowers communities to recognise when someone is depressed and is in pain and how to respond appropriately. In Australia, seven (7) people a day die from suicide – a higher cost to lives than the national road toll or deaths resulting from homicide.
