Wesley Newcastle launches Christmas with the Newcastle Jets

08 November 2006

Fans attending Sunday’s (November 12) clash between the Newcastle Jets and the Central Coast Mariners are being encouraged to bring along a toy or item of non-perishable food to help brighten Christmas for a Hunter family.

The collection is part of Wesley Newcastle’s Christmas Appeal which is being launched during the Jests-Mariners game at Energy Australia Stadium. This year’s Christmas Appeal is aimed at providing hope and practical assistance to over 1,000 families in Newcastle and the Hunter.

The goods will be collected by Wesley Newcastle at the main entry gate and the south entry gate. All toys and food donated will directly benefit those less fortunate in our region.

“We are encouraging all our fans to support Wesley Newcastle’s Christmas Appeal and support those less fortunate in our community” said George Liolio, Newcastle Jets CEO.

“No young child should miss out on the joy of Christmas; opening a present on Christmas morning or enjoying a nice Christmas meal with their family.”

Every year Wesley Newcastle provides assistance to more than 35,000 people in Newcastle and the Hunter – approximately 1 ½ times the capacity of Energy Australia Stadium. This assistance is provided in areas such as emergency relief, accommodation, counseling, youth services and training for those seeking employment.

“There are more than 3,000 homeless people living in Newcastle, not to mention those families who are finding it desperately difficult to make ends meet. This is a simple way of showing that we have not shut them out while we’re preparing to enjoy ourselves at Christmas” said Gary Izzard, Manager of Wesley Newcastle City Mission.

“The Newcastle Community is very good at looking after their neighbours and supporting those local people who may be struggling. We are excited to be launching our Christmas Appeal with the Newcastle Jets and being able to ease the pain and frustration of many local families this Christmas.”

Donations of toys, food and cash can be made at any branch of the Greater Building Society or by visiting a Wesley Uniting Employment office.
