Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate will officially open Wesley Newcastle’s new “Oasis” on Tuesday 12 December at 14 Wood Street, Newcastle West. The morning will commence at 10.30am.

The “Oasis” is a demonstration of Wesley Newcastle’s commitment to redefining community services in Newcastle; it will change the way services are delivered to the disadvantaged and homeless.

“Too often because of funding limitations, community misunderstanding and sector fatigue, the most disadvantaged in the community receive the ‘last bits’ of what we have to offer” said Gary Izzard, Manager of Wesley Newcastle City Mission.

“As one of the regions leading providers of support to the homeless and disadvantaged we are committed to doing better. We plan to give of our best; to work with our homeless men and women in partnership to deliver services with dignity and respect in locations and surroundings that reinforce this philosophy.”

The “Oasis” was designed by Mark Cammareri of Cammareri Landscapes who also donated his time and resources to complete the construction work.

“After speaking with the team from Wesley Newcastle we wanted to create a safe atmosphere where people were able to seek help and talk to others in similar situations. The design incorporates areas of privacy where individuals can seek assistance as well as more open spaces “ said Mark Cammareri.

 “The Oasis is a practical example of what can be achieved when the corporate community and community service sector work together for a common goal. This was my opportunity to offer support to those less fortunate in our community.”
